March 19 Meeting

Today we discussed our fundraiser, which we will be holding in late April. We will make a presentation during assembly, during which Jordan, Kacie, Autumn, and Sophie will be speaking, along with Alizeh. We will also be showing part of the Jackson Katz TED talk. The following two days, Wednesday and Thursday, we will be holding a bake sale. We also created our pen pal emails for the Nilore Model School.

March 12 Meeting

This meeting we discussed issues of child marriage in developing countries. We watched a video about child marriage, which focused on the stories of multiple girls. We discussed the story of Brenda, from Guatemala, who was married at age thirteen. Being so young and married, she is unlikely to continue to go to school and receive an education. She is much more likely to be manipulated by her much older husband. We also discussed the results of child marriage which include high maternal and infant mortality, increased risk of domestic violence, and greater risk of HIV, etc.

March 5 Meeting

To begin our meeting, we watched a video by Jackson Katz that helped explain how we should no longer label problems regarding the females as "Female Problems", but rather "Worldly Problems", because whatever violence or mistreatment is conducted on women comes back around on the men in this world as well. The ladies discussed how femininity is often used in a derogatory tone, and how men who are more feminine than others are also mistreated and tormented. We watched a PSA sent out by the white house as well that discussed ending this abuse, and Alizeh read out some alarming facts and percentages about women mistreatment around the world, and how domestic violence isn't even considered a crime in many countries. We ended our session with an activity where Alizeh would read statements and all the girls would choose whether we agreed or disagreed with it, and then expounded on our reasoning.
