February 14 Meeting

Today we discussed what precisely human rights are. We examined the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was created after the atrocities of World War II. The UDHR includes thirty different points, from the right to a nationality to the right to an education. A video covering the UDHR can be found here. We discussed how the UDHR has many open-ended, non-specific points. In some countries that claim to follow the UDHR, there are still discrepancies between what actually occurs and what the UDHR says must occur. For example, the UDHR states that all people deserve the same wages for the same work; this is not the case in United States. Alizeh also reminded everyone to take the Girls Grade Beijing Survey, which can be taken here.

January 30 Meeting

During today's meeting, we first watched the Girls' Learn International video that gives an overview of the club activities we will be doing this semester as well as some fundraiser possibilities. The decided meeting time is Thursday mornings every two weeks. We voted for club officers, which this semester will be Jenny, Katie, and Karen. We also voted for this semester's club focus, which will be Violence Against Women. Alizeh showed us our GLI's chapter's blog, which is pencilstopeace.blogspot.com. For every meeting, someone will make a post detailing club proceedings. Afterwards, we discussed the importance of girls' education. By educating girls, we can eliminate poverty, disease, and sexism.
